Basic Tips and tricks for Windows XP

Running Applications in Compatibility Mode

With Windows XP, you can run programs as if though they were being run under a different operating system. (This is known as "emulation".) Simply right-click a shortcut, select "Properties" and then check "Run in compatibility mode" and select the operating system you wish to make the program believe it is being run under. This fools or tricks the program into thinking you are really using a previous version of Windows, such as NT, 2000, 98, or 95. This is especially useful for certain games that won't run properly. Be careful *not* to use this with certain system utilities, such as antivirus, defrag, registry, and disk tool applications.

Customizing the Start Menu

Right click on the "Start" button and left click "Properties". From here, you can select the new Windows XP style Start Menu, or return to the Windows 2000/Millennium style one. You can also customize the two possible choices using their corresponding "Customize" buttons. This also allows you to turn on or disable cascading menus and other options that are useful, such as large or small icons and more.

Bring Back Those Desktop Icons

After you install Windows XP, you probably noticed that some of your icons from previous versions of Windows you've used are missing. Microsoft did this intentionally to help simply and reduce clutter. Of course, for some people, this isn't the best choice or the user preference. So, if you want those icons like "My Computer" and "My Network Places" back, just open Display Properties (right click Desktop Wallpaper, left click "Properties") and click the "Desktop" tab. Click the "Customize Desktop" button and on the "General" tab check the items you want. You can also change the icons used by these desktop items in the same screen. One final tip related to this screen is the "Clean Desktop Now" button, which notifies you of unused icons on the desktop and offers to remove them if you choose.

Give Me My ClearType

Windows XP includes a great new visual technology, called "ClearType" which increases horizontal legibility by approximately 300% and it looks great. Go back into "Display Properties" [see tip: "Bring Back Those Desktop Icons" for instructions] and this time, go to the "Appearance" tab. Click "Effects" and for the second drop down box, labeled "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", select "ClearType". Click OK twice and you're all set.

Lock Computer vs. Welcome Login Screen

You must go into Control Panel and open the "User Accounts" applet to change this setting. Click "Change the way users log on or off". For maximum security, uncheck the "Use the Welcome screen" option. This re-enables the use of the "Lock Computer" option from the ALT CTRL DELETE menu, but prevents multiple users from being logged on locally at a single time. This also returns to the Windows 2000 style login screen. If you'd rather have the ability to *not* be able to use "Lock Computer" and would rather allow multiple users to logon to the computer at a single time locally, leave this setting checked and also check "Use Fast User Switching".

3 Quick Aspects To Consider When Getting A New Samsung Mobile Phone

Samsung is among the top mobile phone brands you can trust for high quality phones. It has a myriad of phones to choose from and to suit all kinds of budgets. The latest phones from Samsung come with amazing features that you can literally work from your phone if you have no access to a computer or on the go. But considering that not all features are important to everyone, you must of course determine what matters to you most and select the phone that offers you rather that. Here are a few aspects you might want to consider when chasing for a Samsung mobile phone.

Storage capacity

No matter what you intend to use the phone for, every user wishes to have a phone with a big capacity when it comes to storage. You may want to download apps, take and save photos and even create videos and all this without really running out of storage space. Fortunately, most phones of this brand come with huge storage spaces from 2GB all the way to around 64GB. Choose the size that serves your personal and professional needs, but remember that sets that come with larger capacities tend to be a little cost compared to those with smaller ones.

Battery life

This is what will determine how long you can use your phone before needing a recharge. The majority of phones from Samsung have long lasting batteries, but you need to remember that a few factors also play a role in how long the battery lasts. For instance phone that are 4G enabled tend to be a little low when it comes to battery life compared to 3G enabled phones. How often you use the phone can also determine the life of your battery after every recharge. If browsing is your thing, consider using WIFI over 3G to save the life of your battery. Whereas you can have up to 15 hours talk time on your Samsung, you may need to get the latest models for this and probably more. Again, consider your phone usage and select a model that will work efficiently for you.

Screen size

It is true to say that smartphones with larger screens are more acceptable among users, but standard sized screens still appeal to many. The good thing about Samsung is that it offers all sorts of screen sizes to its users so you can find what you prefer. Whether you like small displays or larger ones, you will find all kinds of screen sizes and resolutions to suit your needs. The Galaxy Note makes a very good example of models offering larger displays with its 5.5inch display. With such a display, working your spreadsheets is easy and so will watching a movie from your phone.

When it comes to Samsung mobile phones, there is something for everyone in terms of size, price, colors and features. You simply need to know what your needs and priorities are and then choose a phone that works for you.

What is the Software Development Life Cycle? Introduction to the SDLC

Programming software or an application can be somewhat stressful at times, especially when it comes to coding different parts of a big project. Thus, having a system in place that allows you to take the development process step-by-step without feeling overwhelmed is essential to producing a high-quality piece of software.

This is exactly what the SDLC is - a system of activities that includes several stages or phases and when followed, ensures that you have a good understanding of the task at hand while also eliminating error as much as possible.

In this article, we'll be deep diving into these stages and what each of them includes.

Business Analysis or Discovery Phase

First, you have to plan. There's no such thing as too much planning and if you miss out even one minor detail during this stage, you could find yourself having to revise the entire project.

During the analysis stage, there are a few things that you need to do. You should start by brainstorming and coming up with some ideas to base your project on. For example, if you were developing a new booking system for a hotel, you could consider linking hotel bookings with restaurants bookings - one of many possibilities.

Make sure that the ideas which you come up with are in accordance with your customer's (or your own) requirements so that you're sticking to the original task while being creative and coming up with innovative ideas.

It's also important that you keep in mind the available timeframe, costs, and resources so that you don't end up developing something that your customer's computer system isn't capable of handling, that they can't afford, or that would take a ridiculously long time to program.

All in all, this stage is for you to get a better idea of what the final piece of software should look like as this will be what your work is based of.

At this point in the SDLC, you should have all of the information that you need to make a brief start on the software development and even come up with a basic prototype - at the very least, you should be able to construct a more detailed breakdown of the project than you had before. It's worth taking the time to do a brief prototype so that you and your customers can see your ideas in action and gather some feedback.

Now, after detailing the development project as thoroughly as you can, split it up into smaller tasks. If you're working with a team of developers, then this is also a good time to split up the tasks accordingly so that everyone is familiar with what role they will be taking on and begin preparing.

Design

This stage is relatively simple, in comparison to the other stages of the SDLC, and typically includes a system analyst and the lead developer. They discuss the system that the software is going to be installed on, any limitations that the system has which would be relevant to the software functionality, and they make sure that the proposed piece of software won't encounter any major issues once it has been implemented.

Following on from the Systems Analysis stage, a more complex prototype may be created so that all involved parties can gain a better understanding of what the final product will look like and scope out any problems that might arise.

Before moving onto the next stage, which is programming, the lead developer will confirm all of the plans that have been created and ensure that the client's needs are going to be satisfied, before proceeding and starting the main development.

Programming

There isn't a lot to discuss regarding this stage other than it's time for you to get to work! Put everything that you've planned for into place, begin your programming, and develop a piece of software that you're satisfied with.

One thing worth keeping in mind is that even though you will have gathered all of the information that you need earlier on, if you're unsure of any of the job requirements then contact your client - there's no shame in clearing up any uncertainties and they won't criticize you for doing so.

Testing

Testing the coded program is important. This isn't as simple as running the program, using each of the features once, then calling it quits - you have to conduct thorough testing among several parties while using several testing methods.

  • Without overcomplicating things, below are some of the things to keep in mind during the testing phase.

  • When you interact with the program or enter data (input), are you being provided with the output that you expect?

  • Can each of the program's features be easily identified and do they function as they should?

  • Does the program fulfil its initial purpose?

  • Does the program run efficiently and make good use of the computer system's resources?

  • Are there any improvements that you can make?

After excessively testing your program to make sure that there's nothing wrong with it, you're ready to implement it.

However, if you find that there are problems or that improvements could be made, be sure to fix them before you continue. Remember to take a note of the bugs that you encountered as well as how you fixed those bugs - this is useful in case you experience any related bugs in the future.

Implementation

Finally, it's time to implement the software into the environment that it is intended for. This is the final stage of the SDLC and includes setting up the software on the intended computer system, any other systems that it will be required on, and walking through your client how to use it.

You should also consider putting together a basic user guide, depending on the complexity of your program, so that they have a thorough understanding and they don't need to contact you every time that they have a question or query. Handing out user guides will also make it easier to explain the software to large groups of people.

What's Next?

Now that the software has been created from scratch and is installed and set up as it should be, you can put your feet up and relax.

While not an official stage, after the implementation of the software that you programmed, you should be prepared for maintenance. Generally, maintenance refers to any changes that your client wants to have made to the software, any updates, or fixing any bugs that arise.

Some software development projects will require maintenance while others won't, thus, it is not considered a stage of the SDLC.

To Conclude...

This might seem like an excessive software development model although by following the SDLC, software developers and engineers are able to ensure that they don't make silly (yet vital) mistakes and, as a result, create a piece of software which exceeds their client's expectations.

Having this type of process in place ensures that you are on the right track and given that you'll be constantly going over the notes that you've taken during the planning stage, you'll undoubtedly prevent any uncertainties from wreaking havoc and causing you to start from scratch.

Top Gaming Headsets - The Pro's And Con's Of The Ear Force X31 Wireless Xbox Gaming Headset

The Turtle Beach Ear Force X31 Wireless Gaming Headset with Xbox Live chat is a without a doubt One of the top gaming headsets available for Xbox gamers, yet it does have a few annoying flaws. This is not so much a "technical review" as a real gamers experience with the headset, because this my weapon of choice when it comes to my gaming headphones. I got sick and tired of the crummy chat sound with the standard Microsoft headset, plus my wife and kids were tired of listening to the noise from the video games late at night.

I have a friend who ran the local video game store, and the solution's he recommended were the Turtle Beach Ear Force X11's (wired) or the X31's (wireless). In the end I chose the wireless option for a few more dollars, mainly to prevent possible accident damage to my system from my wife or kids tripping over wires. Once removed from the package, it took me about 8-10 minutes to hook up the headset to the console and have it running. The first game I played with them was Gears of War2 in normal campaign mode. WOW! There was no doubt the X31's reputation as one of Xbox's top gaming heads was well earned! My first impression was the way I could FEEL the explosions in the background, it was like I could imagine being in the actual game.

Next I had to try Modern Warfare 2 in online multiplayer so I could test out the quality of the chat features. The clarity of the other players voices was amazing, plus it looks much easier to determine where enemy players are hiding since they help you hear even the slightest noise. Playing on the underpass map, I could clearly hear enemies planting C4 mines in the doorway ahead of me! It was surprising to hear sounds I had never noticed before. This is one of the greatest advantages of using a pair of top gaming headsets like the X31's instead of TV speakers and a crummy chat headset.

Some of the many pro's of the Ear Force X31's are:

  • Crystal clear sound quality - Both in-game sounds and live chat sounds fantastic, and really makes the games more fun as well as giving an advantage over opponent's. It has a digital RF wireless connection, which means less static and popping noises (when properly installed).
  • Comfort - I have no problem wearing this headset for 4-5 hours at a time. The soft mesh covering on the ear cups keeps them from making my ears sweat, and the headband is also well padded. Very few of even the top gaming headsets are this comfortable.
  • Xbox Live Chat - Greatly improved clarity improves game play in team death match type games where understanding team-mates is important.
  • Battery Booster Circuit - An interesting feature; a special battery booster circuit literally drains every last bit of energy from the batteries before the headset makes a "humming" sound, then goes dead. Once this happens, the batteries will be TOTALLY dead! I usually manage about 20-22 hours from a set of Duracell's, so consider rechargeable batteries.
  • Price - The price of this headset varies; but at roughly $ 85. 00, it is possibly the most affordable of the top gaming headsets. Amazing headphones for an awesome price.
  • Flexible Mic Boom -Great feature, quickly adjust the mic location without interrupting your game play and getting you killed.
  • Wireless - No worries about someone (read: wife) tripping over headphone cords and damaging your console and games, and then getting mad at YOU for it. Save yourself the hassle now, trust me.

I feel the con's of the Ear Force X31's are:

  • Effects Button Worthless - I have always kept the button in the first position, the 2nd and 3rd positions seem to be worthless most of the time. I'm not sure why it was even built into the unit really.
  • Mute Switch - This is my biggest complaint about this headset, and for 2 reasons: First, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find this switch while in combat / game play. While the X1's were simple to find the mute switch, you will die if you even think about trying to adjust the mute switch while in online multiplayer. The second problem I have with this is that it results in extra wear and tear on the controller jack input because it often results in having to yank the talkback cable out trying to get it to work.

Overall, I rate this as one of the best deals possible among the top gaming headsets. I have been using my X31 wireless headset for a year now, and I can not play without them!
